Comets Close Up in STEM Spanish Podcast

2 May 2025

Communicating science, astronomy in particular, is challenging not only for scientists but also for educators and teachers. Social media and other new cross-media channels have partnered with independent science communicators to create and produce interesting and relevant content for different audiences, especially for students.

Such is the case of the podcast Cráneo: ciencia para niños curiosos (Skull: Science for Curious Kids), created by Cumbre Kids, a website that hosts online educational resources and produces some of the main STEM podcasts for children. More than 120,000 Spanish-speaking families in the U.S., Mexico, and Latin America follow each episode on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Amazon Music.

Astronomer and NOIRLab Postdoc Research Associate Pol Massana was invited to the last Cráneo episode to answer questions about comets from kids aged three to 10 years old.

During the interview Pol breaks down the main features of comets and how they differ from other celestial bodies, such as asteroids or meteorites. He also surprises the audience with data regarding the size of the largest comets.

The podcast is designed so that families with young children can be entertained while learning about somewhat difficult topics. It reinforces concepts taught in school, such as what orbits are.

With different sounds and effects, simple questions and answers, and a very welcoming host, Pol Massana's episode of Cráneo is a must for you and your students, and can be listened to on the way to school, or just before bedtime.
